Birds are funny. If you watch them, you can see their personalities, which look oddly similar to human personalities.
I enjoy the performances so much that I feed these little feathery creatures to bring more of them into my yard. Freeze-dried worms for some varieties, thistle seed, oiled sunflower seeds, or sugar water for others. They wait so eagerly for the handouts, that they will buzz my windows to let me know if the food is empty.
My daughter lives on the third floor of an apartment building. She has had a stash of worms in a feeder for about a month now. No takers. Her balcony is level with the tops of the surrounding trees. You would think at least the high-fliers would discover them, the type As would communicate and direct others to the feeder, and she would soon be bossed around by the pushier, and hungrier of the lot asking for refills.
It occurred to me that often we miss the smorgasbord of blessings that God has for us because we are so busy looking at what is at ground level that we forget to look up. Fly higher. Set our sights on things above. Sure, we glean some wonderful and necessary things when we just address what is in front of us, but when that runs out and things look bleak, what do we do? We scrap and fuss with each other, point fingers, lament our lack of abundance, and wallow in our situation. If we would only look up, what joy and fulfillment is there! Our heavenly Father promises to be our provider and sustainer, but we must look in the right place! “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
With all our quirky personalities, we were each created special, by God, on purpose, for a purpose! We are so precious to our Heavenly Father, and He offers a never-ending supply of all that we need. “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
Before we get to the feeling of need, desperation, scarcity, or fear, don’t be a birdbrain – look up! When we go to God with our hearts and our needs, He is faithful to provide for us. He gives us access to His treasure trove of provisions that equip us for any and all situations, nourishing our spirits and filling us to overflowing. This allows us to fly high and soar long until we join Him in heaven.
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
